Talking Marketing (Without the Nausea 🤢)

Have you ever done something that made your heart race and your stomach flip — not because it was wrong, but because it was new?

That’s how I’ve felt more than once while learning how to market my book, The Independents. Writing the story felt natural. Sharing it with the world? Not so much.

Recently, I had the opportunity to talk about this very feeling on the Truant Pen podcast, hosted by Sam Cameron, in an episode called “How to Market Your Book, Without Throwing Up.” The title alone made me laugh — and immediately say yes.

What the conversation really became, though, wasn’t just about marketing. It was about courage. About showing up for something you care about even when it feels awkward, overwhelming, or outside your comfort zone.

Marketing has been one of the steepest learning curves of my author journey. I’m still figuring out what feels authentic, what works, and how to share my work in a way that feels true to who I am. Sitting down with Sam gave me a chance to pause and reflect — not on what I haven’t mastered yet, but on the progress I’ve made along the way.

In our conversation, we talk about:

  • My journey sharing The Independents with readers

  • Learning by doing

  • Why progress matters more than perfection

I’m not an expert. I’m just someone willing to try, learn, and keep going — even when it feels uncomfortable. And I know I’m not alone.

Whether you’re writing a book, starting something new, changing directions, or taking a leap that makes your stomach do somersaults, I hope this conversation reminds you that fear doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong. Often, it means you’re growing.

If you give it a listen, I hope it leaves you feeling encouraged — and a little braver — as you keep moving forward.

Here’s to doing the scary thing anyway. 💛
